Ceylon Energy successfully resolved critical settlement and structural cracking issues at the Solid Waste & Electricity Depot Building owned by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), located at No. 01, George R. De Silva Mawatha, Colombo 13. The project was executed in collaboration with the CMC and the main contractor, Darington Construction (Pvt) Ltd. A detailed geotechnical investigation revealed that the site consisted of loose sand layers extending up to 6.0 meters in depth, which contributed to the building’s settlement problems. Although micro piles were initially recommended as the remedial solution, site limitations and budget constraints required a more practical and economical alternative.
In response, Ceylon Energy proposed an innovative rectification strategy using CHANCE Helical Piles SS200/RS4500 in place of conventional micro piles. The alternative design involved the installation of 16 helical piles to achieve the required load-bearing capacity and stabilize the foundation. This solution was carefully engineered to meet structural safety requirements while addressing the logistical challenges presented by the constrained urban site.
The implementation of helical piling technology proved highly effective, completing the stabilization process in just one quarter of the originally estimated project duration. Most notably, the approach resulted in a 30% reduction in overall project costs while successfully eliminating settlement progression and preventing further structural cracking. This project demonstrates Ceylon Energy’s commitment to delivering innovative, efficient, and cost-effective engineering solutions that ensure long-term structural integrity and sustainability.
